Allerdale Borough Council is warning residents about a telephone scam where callers are claiming to be from the authority and saying they can change the household’s council tax banding for a fee.
A spokesman for the council said: “This is a scam. Please do not provide your bank details or pay any money to these people. The council is not ringing customers about changes to their council tax banding.”
He added: “Anyone who thinks their council tax band is wrong can get it reviewed for free. For more information visit: https://www.gov.uk/challenge-council-tax-band
