Keswick’s mayor says no figures are available regarding the number of deaths from or confirmed cases of coronavirus in the town or across the North Lakes.
“I have tried to get figures from the NHS regarding COVID-19 cases in Keswick,” said Cllr David Burn as he gave his mayor’s report at Thursday evening’s town council meeting.
“In Cumbria as a whole, there have been 1,345 COVID-19 reported cases from a population of around 500,000 but I cannot get a handle on the position in Keswick,” the mayor told fellow councillors.
The latest and most local breakdown of figures for coronavirus deaths from NHS England show that, up to yesterday (Saturday), 216 people had died at acute hospitals run by the two health trusts which cover Cumbria.
The combined total was 92 at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle and the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven, both of which serve patients from Keswick and the North Lakes. The two hospitals are run by the North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust.
The death toll was 124 within the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal and Furness General Hospital in Barrow as well as the Royal Lancaster Infirmary.
Tragically, those losses include Simon Guest, a radiographer at Furness General Hospital, who died on Wednesday evening.
The latest national figures up to Saturday show there have been 114,217 coronavirus cases reported in England, with 15,464 deaths in UK hospitals. The total death toll worldwide from the pandemic is 160,000.T
