Two organisations in Cumbria are among the NHS trusts that will benefit from the £31 million raised by national hero Captain Tom Moore.
Nearly 1.5 million people have sponsored the Yorkshire-born army veteran since he set himself the target of walking 100 lengths of his garden before his 100th birthday, which he is celebrating today.
Capt Tom, who has been made an honorary colonel, passed the £30 million milestone from his extraordinary birthday walk in aid of the NHS this morning shortly after an RAF flypast over his house in Bedfordshire.
Some of the money will be going to the charitable trust for the North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs Keswick’s Mary Hewetson Hospital as well as the Cumberland Infirmary at Carlisle and the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven. The Cumbria, Northumberland,Tyne & Wear NHS Foundation Trust will also benefit from Capt Tom’s fundraising.
Details of the amounts involved and how they will be spent have not yet been revealed.
