Friday 8th May 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (commonly known as VE Day). In May 1945 Germany surrendered to the Allies and, after six long years of fighting, the war in Europe came to an end. Millions of people across Britain greeted the news with bunting, parades and parties, singing and dancing in the streets.
Councillor Celia Tibble, cabinet member for environment with responsibilities for Armed Forces Champions said: “The 75th anniversary is a significant date which I hope residents will take the time to reflect, and to thank and pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice and those who fought so hard to make that moment in 1945 possible. Without them, many of us what not be here today.
“I would like to encourage everyone to celebrate VE Day in the safety of their own home.”
