Volunteers from the Keswick and Wasdale mountain rescue teams turned out on Sunday morning to help a woman who had injured her ankle after falling near Sty Head Pass between Great Gable and Scafell Pike.
The call came in to the Keswick team at around 11.15am after the group the 19-year-old was with realised that their attempt help her down to Seathwaite wasn’t possible.
However, Wasdale MRT members had set off for a training exercise and were relatively close to where the casualty was and reached her quickly. After treating her ankle and giving her pain relief the Wasdale team stretchered the woman down towards Seathwaite where they handed her over to Keswick rescue volunteers near to Stockley Bridge.
A Keswick MRT spokesman said: “The Covid-19 threat means rescue teams protect themselves with PPE (as seen in the photograph). Bear in mind that Sunday was a very hot and muggy day and so a long stretcher carry in PPE is particularly difficult. Our thanks go to the Wasdale team who, following the handover, had to ascend back over Sty Head to Wasdale. A sterling effort.”
