Market Square, Keswick

Keswick’s new crime-busting CCTV system should be installed in the town centre in time for Christmas.

In September, the town council agreed to spend around £18,000 for two CCTV cameras to be installed in Market Square as part of Cumbria police’s countywide network which is monitored by officers. The sum included £6,000 from its police and crime commissioner’s fund.

The cameras were due to go up in six to eight weeks, but in an update last week, councillor David Burn told colleagues: “We are hoping to have it installed by December.

“Installation did slip a bit but Boris (Johnson) is wanting to give us a good Christmas and we should get it in for then when there will be a lot of people coming to town.”

The hi-tech equipment can identify a face from hundreds of yards away, helping police to trace offenders and secure court prosecutions with videos and stills for street crimes such as public disorder, theft or drug dealing.
