The first patient from the Keswick area had the COVID-19 vaccine today.
She said she was “honoured” to have the vaccine.
Retired holiday cottage manager Frederica Stuart, 80, of Braithwaite, was the first patient to receive the vaccine at Wigton Hospital this morning.
She said: “Oh I think it’s a miracle really. Hopefully, when they get it through people, then we can go back to living a proper life.”
Dr Richard Massey, GP clinical lead for the Keswick and Solway Primary Care Network, said: “It feels fantastic to get this started and really make a difference for our patients.
“Practices have worked tremendously well together, from our admin teams to our clinical staff who have come along to help today, and the support we’ve had from our community teams and the estates department at North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust. It’s just fantastic.
“We’ve had tremendous support from our volunteers. Northern Fells Group have helped us to co-ordinate any volunteers that have come forward, and this wouldn’t have been possible without our volunteers.”
He added: “Please don’t contact your surgery about the COVID vaccine at this time. We know who we need to invite and when, and your surgery will be in touch when it’s time to come in.”
