A new policy for household waste and recycling has been agreed by Allerdale Borough Council.

The policy aims to ensure a consistent approach to waste services across the borough and outlines a set of rules and standards that the council will use to deliver collections to residents and trade waste customers.

Another aim of the policy is to ensure that waste services operate effectively and efficiently to achieve the following aims:

  • Reduce the amount of total waste and recycling at source before it is collected.
  • Maximise the use of recycling within the total amount of waste/recycling collected.
  • Reduce the amount of waste going to landfill in line with the waste hierarchy.

The 38-page document was agreed by members of the council’s executive at a meeting yesterday.

It covers everything from methods of collection, frequency, container replacement, weather disruption and enforcement action.

Councillor Tony Markley, executive member for environmental services, said: “Our waste and recycling service is one of the most important functions of the council and a service that affects every single person living in the borough.

“This new policy aims to build on the brilliant work done so far within the council and by our colleagues at Allerdale Waste Services to deliver a great kerbside waste and recycling collection service.

“As part of our 10-year council strategy we pledged to help create a ‘cleaner, greener Allerdale’ and this policy will help us achieve that goal.”

The policy also takes into account the need to provide enhanced services to those in genuine need, protect the environment and the health and safety of the public and the staff.

A draft of the policy can be found at https://democracy.allerdale.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=11&MId=4991.

A final version will be available on the council’s website in due course.
