A large collection of gold sovereigns, Britannias and silver coins are set to go under the hammer next week for charity.
The private collection, from a deceased estate in Eden, will go to auction at Mitchells in two sales and raise money for the World Wildlife Fund, World Vision and Medecins Sans Frontieres.
Mitchells Auctioneers said the decision to sell the collection in two sales was made because it was substantial, including 120 gold Britannias, 375 gold sovereigns and a quantity of proof silver coinage.
The first half will be sold next Wednesday 17th March by live webcast from its Cockermouth saleroom with participants either leaving advance bids by commission beforehand or bidding live online and by telephone during the sale.
The second half of the collection will be sold in Mitchells Antiques and Fine Art Sale from 16th June to 18th June.
Last year, the auction house held an auction in aid of the Lake District Calvert Trust.
It sold lots donated by its supporters for free as part of a timed online auction.
The items, which included artwork, holidays, experiences and pledges, raised almost £10,000 and additional lots donated by Mitchells customers raised £500.
The top selling lots were holiday cottage packages in Keswick, Braithwaite and Strathcarron donated by the charity’s supporters that fetched around £400 each.
Michael Roberts, Mitchells’ head of department, said: “Mitchells takes it social responsibility seriously and are keen to help the local community wherever possible.
“I’m happy to assist in these troubled times since I’m aware of how badly hit charity funding has been during the pandemic.
“Even with lockdown being eased, it will take a long time for many organisations to recover and see their income levels rise to pre-pandemic levels.
“Where practical, Mitchells will be pleased to assist in the auction sale of items to generate charity funds.”
