A new solution is being sought for a popular footpath between Keswick and Portinscale which suffered considerable damage for the second time when the River Derwent flooded the area during heavy rain two weeks ago.
Lynne Jones, chairman of Keswick Flood Action Group, has asked the Environment Agency to carry out investigations on the river along the Howrahs.
She claims the problem is, in part, due to the abandoned tree debris and gravel heaps just upstream of Portinscale bridge.
“If this isn’t resolved then every time the river overspills, as it has to as this is the flood plain, then this section of path will wash away, she said.
“The river is trying to go in a straight line in any case. The gravel deposits and the tree debris make that a much more easy option for the River Derwent.
“Not my place to suggest solutions but the river bank needs reinforcing here, the path needs a sensible option to deal with the problem and somebody needs to clear the river out and maintain it properly before there is no field left.”
After she sent photos and comments to the Environment Agency she received a reply which said a lot of gravel had been deposited during the last flood event and an inspection would be carried out.
Work is expected to be carried out in September.
