Two Keswick sports clubs have been hit by reported local outbreaks of COVID-19.
Training at Keswick Rugby Club did not take place last weekend, while the couple who run the bar and restaurant at Keswick Golf Club are coming out of 10 days self-isolation.
Rugby club secretary Liz Wakeman said action had been taken following reports of cases of coronavirus in the town during half-term and a rumoured outbreak in the Borrowdale valley.
She said: “We are usually ahead of the curve and have decided to err on the side of caution. There is just a bit of adult training going on, which we have cancelled, and the summer touch rugby on Friday night did not happen. The bar is still open.
“We take our rugby seriously but we also take the health of our members seriously.
“Those most affected at the moment are younger people so we have decided to take this cautious approach.”
Meanwhile, the restaurant and bar at the golf club are to re-open today after Tim and Jackie Attwood, who run the catering, were forced to self-isolate for 10 days after being in contact with their son, George, who tested positive for COVID-19.
Jackie said: “It’s a shame because we have only been open since May 17 when restrictions were lifted and before you know it we were closed again. We have just taken over at the golf club, so it’s been a bit of a shock.”
People have still been able to play golf but have been unable to use the facilities at the club because they have been closed.
“It’s had a massive impact on the golf club because we get lots of visitors and tourists and part of playing the game is having a drink at the ‘19th hole’. But we are now ready to fling open our doors and to welcome people back once again,” added Jackie.
The 10 days of isolation have also impacted on the couple’s outdoor catering business, which has led to “massive upheaval” for their customers.
She said one couple, who have already postponed their wedding three times, tied the knot on Tuesday but ended up with no outside caterer.
The couple also had a funeral booked for last Thursday but had to cancel the catering..
