A popular footpath linking Keswick and Portinscale is to close for a week to allow repairs to be carried out.
The Howrahs path has suffered serious damage several times in recent years during floods, including Storm Desmond in 2015.
The issue has been raised repeatedly by Keswick Town Council, which has sought repairs or heavier investment to protect it.
Now Cumbria County Council has announced that it is to start repairs on the path on Monday September 6, the first weekend after the school holidays.
The closure will be for one week when the county council will repair the sections that have been washed away or damaged.
The worst areas will be dug up and the hardcore replaced with sandstone or limestone flags.
“I think this is a good solution and behind the scenes I’ve been nudging and lobbying for this for some time.” said Councillor Tony Lywood, a town councillor and Keswick’s representative on the county authority.
“Cumbria County Council are now quite aware that each year there may have to be some repairs on an ongoing basis.
“I think flags may be the solution in the worst areas of this important path to locals and visitors alike. Most of the path is still in good condition and this remedial work will enhance it,” he added.
