Councillors in Allerdale have approved a bid that requires the council to explore banning the use of disposable barbecues on council land, wildlife sites and licensed festivals.
A full council meeting of Allerdale Borough Council at the Greenhill Hotel in Wigton last night voted on a motion put forward by Sally Lansbury, the councillor for Keswick.
The motion said: “In support of the work of the Climate Change Group Council, ask officers to explore processes to prohibit the use of disposable barbecues on all council recreational land and wildlife sites and for licensed festivals and events on council-owned land.”
It also committed the council to write to the local MPs Trudy Harrison, Mark Jenkinson and Neil Hudson to ask them to support this action and lobby Government for changes to legislation to prohibit the sale of these items.
The motion was approved by 31 votes for, three against and one abstention.
