A temporary 32-space pay and display car park is in the pipeline for Keswick with the aim of generating funds for a new youth centre for the town.
Plans have been submitted to the Lake District National Park Authority for the site of the former youth centre off Main Street at the rear of Kat’s Kitchen.
The youth centre owns the proposed site and the centre had to be demolished nearly a decade ago after being damaged in the 2009 floods.
It has been used informally for car parking, said the applicants, but the new arrangement would see that become 24-hour pay and display with a machine, with the current temporary fencing removed.
In documents submitted to the national park authority, representatives said: “The use of the land for car parking will generate income to help support ongoing much-needed youth centre activities and hopefully help towards funding a youth centre building in the future.”
It would be operated on a temporary basis but for more than 56 days of the year and the applicants said it would “improve and tidy” the appearance of the site.
