9.33pm
Agencies across Cumbria are continuing their response to Storm Arwen and the subsequent power outage which may continue to impact many throughout tonight (27 November).
Electricity North West are working to restore power as soon as possible to those who remain without electricity. Over 50,000 homes have had power restored, however thousands more households may be without electricity overnight.
A coordinated effort is underway to support those who are without power, with provisions and supplies being prioritised to those deemed most vulnerable – who agencies are contacting directly.
With low temperatures expected to continue throughout the night, motorists are asked to take care if they are travelling. Some petrol stations have been impacted by the power outage and drivers are encouraged to be mindful of this ahead of any journey.
Many of the roads impacted by the high winds during the past 24 hours have been cleared. Motorists are encouraged to continue to drive to the conditions.
The public are requested to kindly continue to look after vulnerable people in their communities; if you are aware of an individual who is vulnerable, please check on them and support them, make sure they have the right medication and provisions. If they do require medication or care, please contact their care provider as soon as you are able.
If you see power lines down, do not approach them. Report them to Electricity North West on 105.
Who to contact:
- If you wish to report a problem on the county’s roads, please contact Cumbria County Council Highways Hotline on 0300 303 2992, or report online via the County Council website.
- For power cuts contact Electricity North West on 105, but please only call if your query is urgent to help prioritise customers in the most vulnerable circumstances.

2.58pm: Electricity North West said its engineers had restored power to over 50,000 properties since yesterday.
Stephanie Trubshaw, customer director and Electricity North West’s incident manager, said: “To enable engineers to focus on restoring electricity to the remaining properties over the next 24 hours, we will be cancelling all planned work on the electricity network for Monday and Tuesday.
“If you have received notification from us about a planned power cut for Monday or Tuesday this will not go ahead and your electricity supply will not be interrupted.
“Make sure you keep yourself safe and have blankets and torches to hand and look out for relatives and neighbours.”

“It’s normal,” said a spokeswoman for Honister Slate Mine. “It happens all the time. Someone always has to be here so if we can’t drive up, we walk up.
“Ice is the biggest problem. The whole road was frozen solid.”
She added that while its gritted, motorists should take extra care still when tackling the pass. The slate mine is fully open.
1.16pm: We’ve been told Honister Pass is open, thanks to Honister staff who have gritted and cleared the road.
1.08pm: Keswick’s Fitz Park has taken a bit of a battering in the storm:

The 685 service the A69 between Carlisle and Brampton is unable to serve stops between Tesco roundabout and Greenhill.
The X5 service is unable to serve Thornthwaite Village.
Due to the A592 closure at Newby Bridge Stagecoach is unable to operate service through to Windermere. Also the B721 between Lindale and Grange is also closed and X6 will be diverted via Lindale Village. Both closures are due to fallen trees.
Customers are being advised not to travel on the Barrow to Carlisle rail line.
Due to severe weather between London Euston and Glasgow Central, Avanti West Coast is advising trains have to run at reduced speed on some lines.
It says the impact is likely to see train services running across the whole Avanti West Coast network may be cancelled, delayed by up to 120 minutes or revised. Disruption is expected until the end of the day.
Weather warning
The Met Office’s yellow weather warning for wind remains in place until 6pm today.
It says people can expect:
- Injuries and danger to life from flying debris are possible
- Some damage to trees, temporary structures and buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, could happen
- Road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible
- Some roads and bridges may close
- Power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
- Injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties
Power
Highs winds hit the region overnight which caused damage to the overhead electricity network, as well as falling trees blocking roads causing delays to engineers reaching equipment to make repairs.
The weather caused 69,000 properties to lose power overnight, with Electricity North West engineers having restored 37,600 by 7.30am this morning. As repairs are made further damage and power cuts in other areas are expected due to the continuing high winds.
Wind speeds topped 60mph overnight made conditions unsafe for engineers to climb electricity poles to repair damage in many areas.
As well as continually monitoring the weather, Electricity North West was well prepared with more than 70 extra engineers on standby overnight ready to respond.
Keswick Market
Keswick Market was cancelled yesterday due to the forecasted storm.
