Dozens of intrepid walkers, runners and musicians staged a Christmas celebration to remember at the summit of Helvellyn.
Armed with musical instruments, including ukuleles, flutes, guitars and even a 1940s-vintage accordion, they scaled the 3,000ft Lakeland peak for a unique carol service aimed at spreading festive cheer at the end of a challenging year for all.
The event was organised by keen runner and musician Carmine de Grandis, originally from Norfolk but now an adopted Lakelander and member of the Northern Fells Running Club.
He said: “I have three great passions: spending time with friends, running up mountains and playing the accordion.
“To celebrate the end of 2021 I wanted to make these three passions come together by climbing Helvellyn with my accordion, and inviting family and friends to join by running or hiking up to sing carols on the top of England’s third-highest mountain.
“When I suggested the project to my Lake District friends, I expected a resounding: ‘What? You must be mad!’ reply. And I was right! But they all joined me for a great day out.”
Joining Carmine at the summit were Kim Collison, current Lake District 24-hours record holder and Sabrina Verjee, current Wainwrights Round record holder.
Also present were outdoor guides and race organisers Charles and Nicky Sproson, as well as many other friends from the fell running and hiking community.
“I love the tradition of carol singing in the UK,” said Carmine. “I’ve seen that it helps people reflect on the year just gone and look ahead with hope. The Great Outdoors offer a perfect opportunity to search or connect with one’s search for meaning.
“For these reasons carols at the top of the most loved English mountain was to be dream come true.”
The main group met at Glenridding at 10.30am and were at the top two hours later via Swirral Edge where they met fellow travellers from Thirlmere and Dunmail Raise.
As well as traditional carol including Silent Night and O Come All Ye Faithful, the singers also threw in some unusual choices including La Bamba, Just One Cornetto, Feliz Navidad and Happy Birthday.
“It turned out to be one of the most glorious days in terms of weather the Lake District has experienced this winter,” Carmine said.
“There were smiles all around, shared mulled wine, old friendships strengthened, and new ones made. We all left with one thought: let’s meet up to do it again next year!”
