A former marketing boss from Braithwaite has been elected as the new head of the Keswick Tourism Association.
Peter Walter takes over as chair of the board from Anne Cornthwaite, who is stepping down after four years in charge. Having run his own business for 30 years, Peter moved back to his native Cumbria following his retirement in 2020. He joined the association in December last year, and was elected at its meeting this month.
“I’m very happy to take on this role in the association’s 100th year,” he said. “Keswick is as popular as ever, but businesses face many challenges.
“We want the association to support all tourism businesses in the town, help visitors make the most of their time here and promote sustainable tourism. We’ve got lots of exciting plans for 2022.”
During her spell as chair, Anne – who runs a B&B at Ashness Farm in Borrowdale – oversaw improvements to the website, guide production and the creation of several promotional videos.
“The last two years have been a challenge, but thanks to the ongoing support of our members, the use of technology and our dedicated staff, we managed to weather the storm,’’ she said.
“Over recent years I have seen the board become more balanced, with representatives from activity providers, retail businesses and accommodation members and as we enter our centenary year, we aim to continue attracting more local businesses to join the association.”
Tourism manager Vanessa Metcalfe thanked Anne for her hard work, dedication and support over the last four years and presented her with a bouquet from the board and another small gift from the association staff.
