In times of crisis, it’s the small, unexpected gestures that all add up to something bigger.
As the invasion of Ukraine rolls into April, Maureen Lamb, a health care receptionist at Keswick Hospital, has been making lapel ribbons bearing the colours of its flag, and selling them for £1.
By chance, she met Councillor Peter Terry, who is purchasing medical supplies to fill his car ahead of a drive to Poland to deliver help to refugees.
Cllr Terry picks up the story: “I had to go to the hospital to have some stitches removed and noticed she was selling them.
“When I told her of my trip to Ukraine she offered to give me the proceeds! The envelope contains £100. She is still making the ribbons and continuing to sell.”
The touching gesture has been backed with Keswick Rugby Club also chipping in £250.
Online donators gave a massive boost to a crowdfunding appeal – and has raised £5,010. Its target was £2,000.
Mayor Alan Dunn confirmed he will join Cllr Terry on the drive.
It will involve more than 1,000 miles of road to the city of Rzeszów, which is less than 40 miles from the Ukrainian border.
Cllr Dunn said: “We have got to do something to help and this is something we can practically do and we are doing it for Keswick.”
