Children from St Herbert’s Church of England Primary and Nursery School got into the spirit of this weekend’s platinum jubilee by recreating the coronation.
Union flag waving children cheered as they lined the route from the school in Trinity Way to St John’s Church where the crowning ceremony took place. Some of the children dressed in the colours of the flags of various Commonwealth countries.
The procession of year six children saw them in full costume as they took on the roles of Her Majesty the Queen, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Prince Philip, the Queen Mother, bishops, buglers, ladies in waiting, and others involved in the 1953 Coronation.
The children returned to school to enjoy a street party-style lunch in the playground and an afternoon of traditional playground games and activities as well as a very special visit from some corgis and a fell pony that is related to the Queen’s own white fell ponies.
In addition to the Coronation, each class had also created a large canvas painting in the style of world famous artists from each decade of the Queen’s reign and turned them into commemorate stamps. These could be viewed in the school’s link corridor.
The town is celebrating the platinum jubilee this weekend with a special jubilee market in Market Square from 9am to 5pm today, Thursday, June 2 and a Jubilee Pop and Proms at Fitz Park on June 5 from 1pm to 9pm.
