A call for a pedestrian crossing on Keswick’s High Hill to get school pupils safely across the road has been scuppered by Cumbria County Council.
Cllr David Burns had submitted a notice of motion to Keswick Town Council’s July meeting calling on the highways authority to resolve any engineering difficulties and re-iterating the council’s strong support for a crossing in this location.
But the county council tabled a response prior to the meeting which said there was no suitable location for a crossing in the vicinity “due to the proximity of property accesses”.
“Any potential location that would suit the pedestrian desire lines did not pass our feasibility assessments that consider access to and from residential properties, and if implemented, would likely cause damage to vehicles and property,” read the statement.
It was agreed that the clerk write to County Highways emphasising the strong support for a crossing to enable pupils to get to the garage shop and bus stop safely.
It should also highlight that a 1,600-name petition was presented to the council last year backing the crossing.
