Keswick’s First Responders celebrated 21 years of service to the community this week with a gathering of volunteers old and new.
A celebratory cake was cut by two volunteers who have been on the team from the start – Alan Williams and Jocky Sanderson – and the newest recruit, Peter Walter.
Outgoing team leader, Jackie Knight thanked Keswick Town Council, parish councils, Rotary and the Lions for their support over the years, as well as numerous local businesses and individuals.
In an emotional comment, Alan Williams, who recently stood down after 21 years’ service, said of all the responders: “You are all amazing. First Responders are truly special people.”
Peter said: “I’ve loved my first six months as a responder. You never know what you are going to turn up to and I have learned a huge amount already.”
A recent fundraising drive at Booths and an Open All Hours has raised nearly £1,000 which will go to providing the life-saving equipment carried by responders.
Jackie Knight is stepping down after four years as team leader in which she has been instrumental in energising the team and recruiting new volunteers.
First Responders attend around 150 emergencies a year and are often the first on the scene of medical emergencies. They carry life saving equipment such as defibrillators and oxygen.
“When the pager goes off our volunteers will drop everything and can often be on the scene in a matter of minutes”, Jackie said.
There are 15 active volunteer First Responders in Keswick and the surrounding areas who provide a vital – and sometimes life-saving – support to the ambulance service.
