Personal trainers Dave and Broc Bell are flexing up to open a new independent gym in Keswick.
The couple, who met in Australia seven years ago, will see a dream fulfilled when the doors to G’Day Fitness open in the former premises where The Keswick Reminder press was housed in Southey Yard, on December 5.
Dave says that they formed G’Day Fitness with an important goal: “We have wanted to create a space where fitness can become a way of life, not just a gym visit.
“Whether you are training for Bondi or Blencathra, we are bringing that Aussie attitude of fun and active living to the Lake District.”
The couple came to Keswick in February and while in Australia they were involved in remote resort management and were mainly based at Airlie Beach in the Whitsunday Islands in Queensland.
Dave, who hails from Keswick, met Broc while he was backpacking and since returning they have been seeking suitable premises in which to open a gym.
They are very much aware that many consider the Lake District to be an outdoor gym but believe they can complement this.
“The idea is that we will not be competing with the outdoors, we will be working alongside it,” said Dave. “The gym will not just have the standard equipment.
“It will provide training that will make you better when you do go outside. It will increase your fitness when inside and with the weather like it is round here, an indoor place with a roof, where you can work up a sweat when you cannot go out on the fells, is a great place to have.
“It will have everything you expect with resistance based training. It will have an artificial turf track with a sled to push and pull, plus a SkiErg which is basically an upright rowing machine which mimics cross country skiing plus curved treadmills to mirror running patterns.
Weekdays it will be open from 6.45am to 8pm and on Saturday from 8am to 5pm. The couple also plan to run 45-minute fitness classes starting at 6am, once they get established.
“The idea behind the name is that in Australia fitness is a way of life. The idea is to bring that sort of mentality and lifestyle to the gym and training in a gym that is a fun place.”
