A three-year-old girl was pounced upon by an out-of-control German Shepherd dog in Keswick’s Fitz Park.
The child’s mother wrote to Keswick Town Council to make members aware of what happened as she does not believe it is the first time that the large dog has done something like this.
In her email to the council she says that she was in the park with her own dog, which was on a lead, and was pushing a pram containing her newborn while her daughter was running 20 to 30 metres ahead.
“Having played in the river for a while we were making our way over to the play park from the Lion’s Bridge at the bottom of the cricket pitch,” wrote the mum. “My daughter was running and was further in front of me.
“At this point a German Shepherd dog off its lead came running across the cricket field from the MUGA (multi-use games area) and pounced on her, knocking her to the ground and standing over her.
“Fortunately it didn’t bite her and without being over dramatic it could have killed her.
“The dog was out-of-control. I shouted at its owners who got it back, put it on a lead and promptly left the park. They did not come to see if she (daughter) was OK. They just left!”
The woman says both she and her parents have big dogs, so her daughter is used to them.
“This incident was completely unprovoked and I am still pretty angry about it,” she writes, adding: “I think you should know in case any other incidents happen as I don’t believe it’s the first time this dog has done something like this.
“It was truly terrifying seeing it happen and not being able to get there to stop it.”
It is believed the incident took place at around 3pm on November 22.
Police are reminding dog owners that their pet is considered to be dangerously out-of-control if it injures someone or makes someone worried that it might injure them.
