Residents, businesses, and dignitaries from across Keswick have praised the transformation of the town’s pencil factory into a community space.
Keswick Ministries bought the near derelict site and has revamped it. The organisation held an open day last week for anyone interested in seeing the building’s refurbishment.
Visitors were given a tour of the site, showcasing local craftsmanship and conservation of the original factory structure and features.
Among those attending were some who had worked at the factory. One ex-employee said: “It’s nice to see that it has been done in a sympathetic manner. There are so many aspects of the old industrial building that just shine out.”
Allan Daniels, mayor of Allerdale, said: “This is such an asset to our town and community, it’s a pleasure to see this building finally opening.”
Facilities include 10 meeting and event spaces.
Jodi Whitehouse, director of operations for Keswick Ministries, said: “Throughout the year, we want the space to be used by the local community and we are glad that there are already community groups who are using some of the space, with many more interested following the open day.”
