Residents, businesses, and dignitaries from across Cumbria spoke positively of the transformation that has taken place at Keswick’s pencil factory at an open day.
Keswick Ministries offered an open invitation to all interested in viewing the site to see the multi-million pound refurbishment. Visitors were given a tour, showcasing local craftsmanship and conservation of the original factory structure and features.
Among those attending on February 3 were some who had worked within the factory before the Cumberland Pencil Company left the site. One ex-employee said of the building: “It’s nice to see that it has been done in a sympathetic manner. There are so many aspects of the old industrial building that just shine out.”
Allan Daniels, Mayor of Allerdale said on visiting the Pencil Factory: “This is such an asset to our town and community, it’s a pleasure to see this building finally opening.”
Both Keswick Tourism Association and Cumbria Tourism added their support for the event and the opportunity for the local community to see the facilities including 10 separate meeting and event spaces now available in the heart of Keswick.
Jodi Whitehouse, director of operations for Keswick Ministries spoke of how the venue will be used during the year: “Throughout the year, we want the space to be utilised by the local community and we are glad that there are already community groups who are using some of the space, with many more interested following the open day.”
Hayley Peacock, from the Keswick Cheese Deli, said: “There was definitely a buzz about the place and the event was well attended by local residents wanting to see the restoration of the pencil factory for themselves, and local community groups assessing the extensive amount of space on offer to hire.”
