A village school headteacher is taking on a series of fundraising challenges for the Lake District Calvert Trust.
Abigail Jardine, 41, of Threlkeld Primary School, will line up in the London Marathon in April, the Brathay Windermere Marathon in May and the Lakeland Trails 55km Ultra Marathon in July. It is the first time she has taken part in any of the events.
“It’s going to be a massive challenge but I’m determined to complete all three marathons and raise as much money as possible for the Lake District Calvert Trust,” said Abigail. “The support I’m receiving from our teachers, children and parents is really driving me on.
“Each event is special in its own way,” added Abigail. “The London Marathon is one of the greatest road races in the world, Brathay Windermere is run entirely within a Unesco World Heritage Site while Lakeland Trails includes three mountain passes and 7,000 ft ascent!”
Explaining her support for the Lake District Calvert Trust, Abigail said: “Outdoor learning is a huge part of our curriculum at Threlkeld Primary.
“The outdoors allows us to explore, learn and immerse ourselves in a totally different environment. We want everyone to be able to access the outdoors and that’s what the Calvert Trust is all about. Calvert is such an important part of our local community. It changes so many lives for the better.”
Abigail took up running after both her mum and mother-in-law were diagnosed with cancer in 2018 and is grateful for the impact it has had on her life.
“Running has become my head space – it’s my place to relax, learn and come up with new ideas,” she added. “The wellness benefits have been amazing.”
Yvonne Booth, fundraising officer for the Lake District Calvert Trust, said: “We are so grateful to Abigail – and to everyone at Threlkeld Primary School for their support.
“Taking on three marathons is a huge challenge but Abigail is determined to make a difference and we’ll be supporting her all the way.”
