Two men who took over the running of a Keswick pub three months ago have called time on the venture despite increasing footfall at the hostelry.
Justin Farnan, founder of Skiddaw Property Management, and Wulf Davison have been running the Twa Dogs on Penrith Road since November 28 last year.
“Over the last three months we’ve made a real difference to the premises turning it back into a popular community pub,” said Mr Farnan.
“We’ve had great feedback on what we’ve done to the place in a short space of time, but unfortunately, the structure of the deal with Marston’s doesn’t make it commercially cost-effective for us. Especially when we have the other aspects of our business to run.”
The pair have seen footfall to the pub increase dramatically after revitalising the entertainment schedule. They have showcased local bands such as the Cudda Beans and the Band of Captives, as well as introducing regular DJ nights with Café HNW.
However, despite these successes and even with the advent of the tourist season ahead, Skiddaw Property Management felt they had no option but to leave the premises. Marston’s brewery is now readvertising for a manager.
“The brewery have been absolutely straight with us all along and we have no complaints or issues with them, it’s purely that the deal structure in place doesn’t work for us,” said Mr Farnan.
“We sat down with them after three months to discuss a renegotiation on the terms of our tenancy to see if there was a way we could move forward and remain at the Twa Dogs.
“Unfortunately however, we were too far apart and so have amicably agreed to part company. We wish them and whoever takes over next the best of luck, hopefully building on what we’ve achieved.
“We’ve had a blast and made some good friends along the way, so look forward to coming back to the pub and standing on the other side of the bar.”
The pair leave on Monday and are looking to go out with a bang.
This Saturday night they have another DJ set from Café HNW and on Sunday afternoon have the ever-popular Mike Ward and Friends Folk Session. They look forward to a good weekend and an opportunity to say goodbye to their friends – old and new.
