A Keswick woman who has enjoyed a long, interesting and eventful life has celebrated her 100th birthday.
Jane Morgan, who lives at The Millfield care home, served as a land girl in the Women’s Land Army during the war and was described as being “an ace tractor driver”.
She was a very successful teacher, tutoring young children in deprived areas of Nottingham for many years.
Aged 44 she met and married a Jamaican, Will Morgan, and so began a new life in Jamaica along with her stepson Phillip. After 12 years she left Jamaica to join her uncle, Bill Dunn, farming beef cattle in Argyll, thoroughly enjoying life in a vibrant community.
After Bill’s death she moved to Keswick to live with her sister, Lucy Bestley, for 23 years. Jane spent some years in sheltered housing at Lakehead Court before moving to The Millfield when she was 98.
A talented artist, she has many sketch books containing her work, and has always enjoyed gardening and growing her own fruit and vegetables.
Jane said one thing which has contributed to her longevity is good, plain food, much of which she has grown herself.
She added that she also enjoyed “a wee dram of whisky at bedtime”.
Another contributory factor was a take life as it comes mentality and not getting worked up about things. And she pointed out that she had an aunt on Islay who lived until she was 110.
Jane also has an amazing sense of humour. She is very dry, very quick witted, and sees the funny side of everything.
