Organisers of Keswick’s Two’s Company Befriending Scheme hosted a tea party at the Crosthwaite Parish Room to celebrate the charity’s second anniversary.
It was attended by volunteer befrienders and their friends, supporting organisations and referral agencies who enjoyed the opportunity to chat over cake and a cuppa, and were greatly encouraged to hear about the group’s achievements.
There was a great buzz of conversation throughout the afternoon, and scheme leader Keith Rigg said it was really encouraging to see the involvement and support of the local community in the ongoing growth of the befriending initiative.
The Mayor of Keswick, Cllr Steve Harwood and his wife Jane, were in attendance and the Bishop of Carlisle, the Rt Rev James Newcome, who was not able to attend sent a greeting which read: “We’re beginning to emerge from the plague of Covid: but not from the plague of loneliness and isolation, which is equally widespread and even more insidious.
“That’s why I am so grateful for the wonderful work of Two’s Company – and why I am so sorry I can’t be with you this afternoon. Please keep going and thank you for overcoming so many obstacles.
“Everything you do is hugely valuable and greatly appreciated. You are much in my prayers.”
Fiona Overend, scheme co-ordinator, summarised the highlights of the second year’s expanded range of activities, sharing what had gone well and emphasising the difference the scheme has made to the lives of an increasing number of local people.
Keith Rigg offered thanks to all the volunteer befrienders who often went the extra mile, to the partner organisations of Keswick Rotary Club and Churches Together in Keswick, to Cumbria Community Foundation for funding this second year, to the trustees of the charity, and to Fiona who makes it all happen. Tony Welton, chair of trustees, finished by celebrating and thanking all those who had been instrumental in getting the scheme off the ground and well established.
Over the last few weeks there has been a rush of new referrals from those who would benefit from someone to chat to regularly and befriending volunteers are desperately needed.
