A new restaurant has opened in Keswick selling authentic Indian street food and is already getting rave reviews from customers.
Barua has thrown open its doors four nights a week on Lake Road bringing an authentic taste of India to the Lake District. By day, the premises host Lake Road Brunch – better known as LRB – which will continue to operate.
“When you go to a city there are plenty of Indian street food restaurants and food halls; we just felt that there was nothing like that in Keswick,” said Sam Rowley, who has been the driving force behind the new eatery with his half Indian business partner, Zara Barua, from where the restaurant gets its name. “The food is quite adventurous for around here. There are a lot of dishes that people will not have heard of before.
“A lot of our customers have found us through recommendations from those who have already visited.”
“The atmosphere we are trying to create is of casual dining with an emphasis on sharing. The food is served in small dishes and comes out as it is ready rather than all at once. We are looking at providing good food and drinks; with it being Keswick, dogs are also welcome.”
Also involved in the restaurant as business partners are Mark Swider and Steve Stables.
Among the dishes on the menu are masala dosa, an Indian savoury pancake and dahi puri, a spiced chickpea, yoghurt and tamarind filled bread puff, which are both sold on the streets throughout India. There is also vada pav, which consists of fried potato on a soft white roll with tamarind, chilli, mint, coriander and garlic butter.
The restaurant also sells cocktails inspired by Indian flavours such as the Rajasthani Martini, a lychee and rose gin based cocktail, and Delhi ice tea, a play on the Long Island cocktail with tamarind instead of coke. There is also a selection of wines chosen by Jenni Hutchinson from Lake District Wines.
The restaurant is open from Wednesday to Saturday, from 5.30pm to 9pm, people can either book on the website or walk in.
