A stop notice has been served on a pop-up campsite at Low Hollows, Threlkeld, planners at the national park have reported.
In an update to its development control committee last week, members were informed that a number of fields, part of Doddick Farm, had been used as a pop-up site for camping and caravanning over the past two years.
However, they claim the use had “exceeded” the 28 days allowed under permitted development, according to planners, with enforcement action opened and a stop notice served on June 8.
Planners have concerns that the unofficial longer term use might affect the Special Area of Conservation status of the River Derwent and Bassenthwaite Lake catchment area, which could suffer from “additional nutrient loading”.
Soaring nitrate and phosphate levels, caused by human activity, such as soaps, shampoos and detergents, can end up in watercourses, affecting plant and wildlife sites by gobbling up the oxygen and leaving it unable to support life.
