A Cumbrian man has appeared in court accused of causing the death of a young woman by dangerous driving following a night time crash near Keswick.
Lana Maddison, 19, of Silloth, had been a passenger in a black Ford Fiesta which collided with a tree at around 8.40pm on Sunday, November 28, 2021.
Police said the collision had occurred on the A591 close to Keswick, between the Crosthwaite roundabout and Lyzzick Hall Hotel.
Ms Maddison was injured and transported for treatment to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, where she died five days after the crash, on Friday, December 3.
Police launched an investigation following the collision and made a public appear for information in the aftermath. They urged any witnesses — particularly those travelling westbound at the time — to come forward.
Joseph Rowland, 21, appeared at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court this afternoon.
Rowland, of Thursby, near Wigton, faces one charge.
This alleges that he caused Ms Maddison’s death by driving a Ford Fiesta ST dangerously on the A591 on November 28 2021.
During today’s five-minute hearing in front of three magistrates, Rowland spoke from the court dock to confirm his name, address and date of birth.
His solicitor, John Smith, confirmed that no plea to the allegation would be entered at this stage.
Magistrates heard the level of charge meant the case could only be dealt with at Carlisle Crown Court.
Rowland is due to appear there in front of a judge on September 4.
In the meantime he was granted bail.
