Residents living in the communities served by Above Derwent Parish Council have shown an “absence of sufficient enthusiasm” over the lighting of a beacon to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
Parish councillors at the November meeting therefore decided not to take up the invitation to join other towns, villages and organisations across the UK to light a beacon at 9.45pm on June 6 to remember the sacrifice of 210,000 allied casualties of Operation Overlord – the largest amphibious invasion the world has ever witnessed – which saw troops storm Normandy’s beaches.
It was agreed that the parish council – which serves Braithwaite, Thornthwaite, Portinscale, Beck Wythop and the Newlands Valley – takes no further action.
