Keswick Rugby Club continues to inch towards reaching its ambitious £1.9m fundraising goal to build a new elevated clubhouse.
The start of the Big Build project edges ever closer with work on the new clubhouse, needed to cater for an expanding club and prevent future flooding episodes, scheduled to start on May 13.
At the weekend the Davidson Park club hosted a race night which raised more than £400 and a car boot sale that yielded over £800. The club also received a very generous donation of more than £600 from physiotherapist Sue Reid which she had raised by giving a full day of treatment to the cause.
The club has also received some substantial grants recently including £300,000 from the Government when it was one of seven community projects in the North West to take a share of £2.4m from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities’ Community Ownership Fund.
It has also been a good year for the club on the pitch with the youth competing well in all age groups. The under 16 girls were crowned county champions and the Falcons women’s team won the league and were promoted. The senior men’s second team competed for the first time in the Cumbria league and the senior men’s first team managed to fend off relegation in an increasingly competitive league in the north east.
“A big thank you goes to all the support the club has had over this last year and in previous years,” said club spokesman Carrick Wharmby. “But it does not stop here. We still need your support to make this club house real. Please check our website (www.keswickrugbytrust.org) or call down the club.”
This Saturday at Davidson Park the Falcons start the day with a touring team game of rugby followed by the men’s first team competing in the Papa Johns Cup semi-final against West Hartlepool. This will be a highly competitive game with Keswick beating their opponents only a matter of weeks previous to stay in the league.
