A man has died as a result of injuries he sustained in a Keswick flat fire in the early hours of Monday April 29.
Three fire engines from Keswick, Penrith and Ambleside attended the blaze at the property at Wesley House on Tithebarn Street just after midnight.
The Careline flat was well alight on their arrival.
A statement from Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said: “The fire involved a domestic property and one casualty was rescued by fire service personnel.
“Firefighters used two breathing apparatus, one hose reel and one thermal imaging camera to extinguish the fire and were detained for approximately two hours.”
The 44-year-old casualty, who has been named locally as Richard Hawley, was transferred by firefighters into the care of the North West Ambulance Service. The Cumbria Fire and Rescue spokesman confirmed that he died later in hospital as a result of injuries sustained. It is understood Mr Hawley lived his early life at Rosthwaite and went to school in the village.
The fire service spokesman confirmed that the cause of the fire was accidental and the blaze was confined to the flat.
The Keswick Reminder has learnt that Mr Hawley had a serious fall at his house in Borrowdale a number of years ago, leaving him with life-changing injuries.
Until a few years ago he used to play darts for the Scafell Hotel in the Keswick Darts League.
Wesley House is the former Primitive Methodist Chapel and stands opposite Booths supermarket.
The Cumbria coroner has been informed of the death.
