A horse chestnut tree in Keswick’s Upper Fitz Park, which has become a danger to the public, is to be axed this week.
It became apparent that the tree had split at the end of June and Keswick Town Council organised for ratchet straps to be placed around the trunk for support. The footpath has also been closed off until the tree is felled.
The tree officer at the Lake District National Park Authority (LDNPA) was then contacted for advice as the tree is in the Keswick conservation zone.
The LDNPA agreed that the tree is a danger to the public and advised the town that it should be felled as soon as possible. Contractors are arriving next week to do the work and as is town council policy, three trees will be planted in Upper Fitz Park to replace the one being felled.
