Following a road closure in Keswick town centre which led to hundreds of vehicles travelling the wrong way down a one-way system, Cumberland Council has apologised for the inconvenience.
The authority issued a statement responding to recent broadband installation works and traffic management on St John’s Street and Station Street, that resulted in mayhem for road users on October 7 and 8.
A council spokesperson said: “Following a review of the situation, it is clear that the traffic changes caused some challenges. While alternative traffic management options were considered, the approach taken was deemed the safest given the unsuitability of other routes.
“We understand the frustrations felt by road users during the works, and we have investigated the issues, particularly around signage and communication. It has been confirmed that residents and businesses in the affected area were notified in writing on Thursday 3 October regarding the road closure.
“The council is working closely with the broadband installation team to improve communication with local businesses and residents going forward. As of noon on Wednesday October 9, Derwent Street fully reopened, and the one-way system is now operating as normal.
“We appreciate the feedback provided and apologise for any inconvenience caused during this period.”
