The Committed 2 Rock Chix choir will be singing at St John’s.

A newly-formed all-female Keswick choir is to perform its premier concert next week to raise money for the Royal British Legion.

Member Deborah Cowin told the Reminder that Committed 2 Rock Chix was formed because the men kept dropping out of the original choir “and we women liked the sound of our own voices!”

The brainchild of Cath Marcangelo, Committed 2 Rock Chix is a blend of women’s voices from low ladies to sopranos with inventive harmonies within the rock and pop genres.

They will be performing on Friday November 8 at St John’s Church, starting at 7.30pm, when they will be singing lots of old and new favourites to get everyone dancing in the aisles.

Being so close to Remembrance Sunday, the choir will be raising money for the Royal British Legion. To commemorate this special day, the choir will be performing a different version of the Leonard Cohen song Hallelujah which was written by US Navy veteran Sailor Jerri to remember all the service personnel who fought in wars all around the world.

They will also be singing choir leader Cath Marcangelo’s “mash-up” of well-known war songs like Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree, Roll Out the Barrel and a Glenn Miller medley as well as a wide selection of other genres.

“We love singing together!” said Deborah. “Performing in front of a live audience is the pinnacle of our efforts as all the concerts we do are for charity so it’s a win-win all round!”

Deborah said there is no auditioning necessary to join this “merry band of songstresses”.

“Everyone has a voice and whether it’s singing Queen in the car or Bananarama in the bath, Committed 2 Rock Chix will find a space for you,” said Deborah. “Our members come from Keswick and the surrounding villages and some from Cockermouth and Penrith.

“We are quite versatile in our singing styles. We’ve performed songs from musicals, classic rock and roll numbers, soul, Motown, the Rat Pack, Abba, pop music from the 1950s all the way up to the present day.

Tickets are £10 on the door and £8 for over 65s and seniors.
