Town councillors discussing the problem of dog fouling in Keswick’s parks concluded that it was going to be difficult to enforce any solution although it was important to try and have an impact.
Members of the Keswick Parks Charitable Trusts heard that the problem of dogs fouling and being off their lead was not just confined to the parks as clerk Vivien Little had received reports of issues across town.
“We cannot enforce anything on Fitz Park, as it is a large open area, and the vast majority of dogs are well behaved, but it is one or two who spoil it for everyone else,” she said in a report to the trust. “Even if we wanted to ensure that dogs were on leads at all times, it couldn’t be enforced.”
Although concern was raised about the effectiveness of anything that could be done, it was felt that action should still be taken.
It was resolved that the parks manager begin by looking at purchasing ‘clean it up’ stencils to be put down in the parks.
Cllr Louise Dunn agreed to crafting some signs and leaflets while the clerk would look at putting information on social media to encourage responsible dog ownership.
