A new Keswick restaurant’s plans for live and recorded music to be played late at night has hit a wrong note with town councillors.
The owners of Steaks of the Lakes, which is due to open in the former Sally’s Cottages premises on St John’s Street, have applied to Cumberland Council to play live music indoors on Fridays and Saturdays from 9pm to 10pm. They also want to play recorded music from 4pm to 11pm. It is planned to sell alcohol from the premises, Monday to Sunday, from noon to 11pm.
Members of Keswick Town Council’s planning committee broadly supported the application. But they do have concerns over live music being played in a venue which is in an area that has a number of residences in close vicinity, including some containing young families.
The town council is to seek conditions with Cumberland Council, the licensing authority, to ensure that any live music must be finished by 10pm at the latest, and that appropriate sound proofing must be installed.
Cllr Chris Houghton told the April meeting of the town council that the planning committee had also had an application referred to it from Cumberland Council concerning plans to extend the hours that alcohol can be served at the Oddfellows Arms in Main Street, from 1am to 2am.
Councillors heard that those running the pub had no intention of playing music after 11pm and the reason for the drinking extension was that the pub was becoming popular with hospitality staff who go there after their shifts.
