A £1m project to resurface a section of the A66 between Braithwaite and Portinscale will start on Tuesday (May 6).
National Highways is resurfacing just over a mile of both the eastbound and westbound carriageways between Braithwaite Institute and Kentigern Bridge in a month-long scheme. It will provide safer, smoother and more reliable journeys for local road users as well as visitors to the north Lakes. Road markings and studs will also be renewed before the project is completed by Friday June 6.
“This is the second of a small package of essential resurfacing work we’re delivering along the A66 ahead of the busy summer holiday period,” said National Highways project manager William Paterson. “The road will remain open throughout and we’ll be working at night to minimise inconvenience to road users. We’ll also be removing roadworks over the late spring bank holiday at the end of the month to help people on long weekend journeys.”
To reduce disruption, work will take place between 7pm and 5am each night when traffic volumes are lowest. A 40mph speed limit will be in place past the roadworks with a convoy system in place overnight – with drivers held at temporary traffic lights and led past the roadworks by a contractor’s vehicle. On occasion, side road closures and diversions will be required.
As part of the resurfacing package a separate £1.9m project, along the westbound A66 around Troutbeck started last month.
