A man was arrested in the Lonsties area of Keswick on suspicion of attempted murder.
It follows an incident at 6.15am on Wednesday when Lancashire police were called to a report of an assault at an address in Woodplumpton, Preston.
Officers attended and found that a man in his 50s had suffered a serious head injury. He was taken to hospital where he is in a stable condition and remains there for treatment.
A 22-year-old man from Preston was later arrested in Keswick, on suspicion of attempted murder, and was taken into custody.
