Vandals have struck at Keswick’s Fitz Park — putting the zip wire out of action during half-term week with signage damaged at both the BMX track and the multi-use games area, say park officials.
The incidents happened some time between last Saturday and Sunday with “serious damage” said to have been caused to the zip line which will put it out of action for the next few weeks with the wire now missing.
The incidents have been reported to Cumbria police and Keswick Town Council said it would repair the damage as soon as it could.
Clerk Vivien Little said: The money for repairs to Fitz Park comes out of the precept that forms part of the annual council tax bill.
“The Fitz Park play area is one of the best children’s play areas in the county, with families coming from all over Cumbria to use it. The zip line is one of the most popular pieces of equipment, and it being damaged in this way is a huge loss.
“Staff at Fitz Park work extremely hard to make the park a welcoming place for all visitors and locals, and they are understandably upset that this has happened.
“We don’t know who has caused the damage, but if anyone has any information can they please contact Keswick Town Council at [email protected]“
It comes as police announce they have been taking action in Keswick in response to anti-social behaviour.
Police said it has included engagement with schools, identifying and educating those believed to be involved in anti-social driving and patrolling hotspot areas.
“Targeted patrols,” have also been undertaken around St John’s Church in response to a complaint about youths causing damage.
‘’So far no children have been identified,’’ said a police spokesman. “We will continue to patrol this area.”
