Only one pub in Keswick has made it into the latest edition of the CAMRA Good Beer Guide.
The Wainwright on Lake Road, with its mountain themed interior, has been selected for its well-kept beers by volunteer members of the West Cumbria branch of CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale).
It sells Wainwright, a golden ale from Marstons, plus seven other beers on hand pump.
Manager Pretorius Johan said the last time the pub appeared in the guide was 2018 and was delighted that the hostelry was featuring again.
“We serve eight different ales and we keep changing them at different times,” he said. “We also keep it local by supporting the local breweries.
“We have got Wainwright on and this is always a good seller along with Tinderbox IPA from the Fells Brewery at Flookburgh.”
In the brewery section of the guide, the Keswick Brewery features.
It was established by Sue Jefferson in 2006 and now boasts 13 real ales, many of which can be sampled in the popular Fox Tap brewery bar which is open to the public.
Further up the valley in Rosthwaite, the Riverside Bar at the Scafell Hotel gets a special mention as owner Miles Jessop, MBE, recently clocked up 50 glorious years at this traditional Lakeland inn. It has eight ales on hand pump in the stone-flagged bar, which is usually packed with walkers and climbers.
A new entry to the guide is the Horse and Farrier, a freehouse at nearby Dacre, which sells three changing real ales in a village pub that was threatened with closure but has been reinvigorated by an enthusiastic young team.
Worthy of a mention is the Agricultural Hotel in Penrith, which is included in the guide for its great beer and is also one of a handful of Cumbrian pubs to be listed in the CAMRA National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors.
The CAMRA Good Beer Guide costs £15.99.
