An impromptu “party in the garden” at Keswick’s Millfield Care Home was a real morale booster for residents and staff.
The party, held in the garden of the home in Penrith Road, was a spur of the moment decision because of the good weather last Wednesday, with residents and staff enjoying tasty snacks, a glass of sherry and some unusual activities – including riding the unicorn!
Millfield manager Val Loan said: “It was a lovely afternoon and quite a few residents, many into their 90s, took part in the games. It was just a bit of fun. I put some of the pics on the Facebook page and had more than 200 likes and lots of comments.”
The care home was put in lockdown on 13th March, ahead of the national campaign, but Skype and Facetime sessions for the residents and the use of a mobile phone allow residents to keep in touch with to their families and friends at any time.
Val said: “All Millfield residents are free from any symptoms of Covid-19. Staff members have taken on some of the tasks of district nurses who only need to come in an emergency.
“Doctor Hooper from Castlehead Medical Centre Facetimed all the residents this week and all remain well at the moment. Our staff are also masked up if they come within two metres of residents to protect our residents.”
She added: “Relatives can also come to the garden gate and, keeping a safe distance, chat to residents, or see them from the windows whilst they chat on the phone.”
