Twenty-two people died of coronavirus in the latest weekly figures – the highest number since the beginning of November.
The number of new cases continues to fall, however, with a 16 per cent drop in the number of cases in the week ending January 28.
There were 3,969 cases in the county, down from 4,732 in the previous week’s figures.
Cases by district
- Allerdale – 711 (727 per 100,000)
- Barrow-in-Furness – 529 (793 per 100,000)
- Carlisle – 1,080 (995 per 100,000)
- Copeland – 458 (673 per 100,000)
- Eden – 385 (716 per 100,000)
- South Lakeland – 806 (768 per 100,000)
Rates in all districts were below the national average rate (England has a rate of 1,083 cases per 100,000 population).
Rates in all districts except Carlisle were below the regional average rate (North West has a rate of 844 cases per 100,000 population).
The number of new cases decreased in all districts, with Copeland and Carlisle having the greatest decreases (-22% and -21% respectively).
Cases by age group
For the second week in a row, the 5-11 age group had the greatest number of new cases in Cumbria (815 new cases);
For the second week in a row, the 5-11 age group also had the highest rate of new cases in Cumbria (2,195 new cases per 100,000 population);
New cases decreased from the previous week in all age groups, with the 0-4 age group having the greatest proportional decrease of -46%;
New cases in the under 50 age group accounted for 77% of total new cases (the same as the previous week);
Overall, new cases in the under 50 age group decreased by 17% and new cases in the 50+ age group decreased by 14%.
Hospital admissions
A summary for the week ending January 31:
- The number of new patients admitted with COVID-19 at North Cumbria Integrated Care (NCIC) remained the same as the previous week while the average number of patients with COVID-19 in beds in NCIC decreased by 10 from the previous week;
- The number of new patients admitted with COVID-19 at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMB) decreased by five from the previous week and the average number of patients with COVID-19 in beds in UHMB decreased by 14 from the previous week.
