Keswick’s Alhambra Cinema will host the North West Film Archive on Tuesday, February 22 for a Lakeland on Film event, featuring Keswick and the surrounding areas over the past century.
Cinema owner Carol Rennie said: “Watching footage that captures the industries, cultures and traditions of Cumbria in a bygone era brings such a strong sense of nostalgia, and community, and belonging — it feels great to be able to do this again.
“In May 2019, we had an audience of 185 for a similar Cumbria Film Archives presentation of Lost Cumbria on Film.
“The cinema has capacity for 80 due to a socially-distanced seating plan with only 50 per cent occupancy in its main auditorium, with people advised to book in advance.”
Geoff Senior, of the North West Film Archive, will present a curated selection of film clips from 1937 to 1997, including an LMS Railway Company film featuring Lake District attractions accessible by train; a Countryside Club introduction to the English Lakes; Norman Buckley breaking the world water speed record on Windermere in 1956; a 1959 promotional film for Keswick; Postman Plus delivering between Penrith and Martindale; construction of the M6 to Tebay; and a short feature on the Blue Box Century Theatre.
Before and in the interval, audiences will be able to enjoy a soundtrack of The Cumbrian Duo, in a special preview of their yet to be released CD.
