Home schooling during the Covid-19 lockdown is giving children a very different aspect of learning than in their usual setting at their school.
Two pupils in the Skiddaw Class at Braithwaite Primary School are giving Keswick Reminder readers an insight into what they have been learning about during their home-schooling sessions:
Having seen a hedgehog at home one night, Callum spent an afternoon researching them and finding out lots of facts about these prickly little mammals:
Hedgehogs
What do you do with new born hedgehogs?
You can give them wet cat food or dry kitten food soaked with water to make things easy on them. After seven weeks, it’s ok to remove the baby hedgehogs from their mother’s care.
What do hedgehogs eat?
Tinned dog or cat food (not fish-based) and crushed dog or cat biscuits make good hedgehog foods. Specialist hedgehog foods can also be bought from wildlife food suppliers.
Never give cow’s milk to hedgehogs as it can give them diarrhoea.
What milk can you give baby hedgehogs?
Babies and Juveniles. Hoglets should be fed with a milk substitute such as Esbilac which contains all the fats, vitamins and minerals they need. Under no circumstances should you give them cow’s formula which will kill them.
How long do baby hedgehogs stay with their mother?
Young hedgehogs will leave the nest when they are around three to four weeks old to go on foraging trips with their mother. After around ten days of foraging with their mother the young will wander off on their own.
Why hedgehogs eat their babies?
It is common for any mom hedgehog to eat her babies if there is a significant disturbance in her environment. They eat their babies when they are disturbed and fear for their babies’ lives. The nutrients being absorbed into her body is better than the nutrients going to a predator, after all.
Key Stage 2 have been learning about how to write an ‘argument’. Hannah’s subject was mixed gender sports teams:
Sports teams should be a mix of women and men
Until now, women and men have been on different teams which is wrong. People have always thought that male teams are better and more accomplished. Now the time has come to say that women are as accomplished as men and that whatever gender you are, you can play against anyone competitively in a mixed team.
Some of the reasons women have always been thought of as the under dogs in sport is that originally they were not allowed to play sport because it was not a lady like thing that they would get sweaty and muddy. By the time women started to play sport men had already mastered the technique and all the money was going towards them, so they could start to afford better equipment to train with.
If there were mixed teams everybody would get an equal share of money and facilities. So it would be fair whatever gender you are and women would not be thought as the under dogs. In addition to that, women would get paid the same amount rather than it being the money of those in the top seven women’s football leagues equals to one man footballer`s pay. If they played in mixed teams, they would improve rapidly and close the gap of skills between them.
It makes me upset how women don’t get as much money because they go and build a family then have to get back into shape. They don’t have a choice! They still should get paid the same.
In summary, they should play in mixed teams so everybody would get the same amount of money and better facilities which would lead to more skilled players and an enjoyable match to watch.
