Work to repair a slope damaged by storms in Keswick is set to start on Monday.
Contractors will be on site on the B5289 near to Ashness Bridge Pier to stabilise the slope supporting the road.
Cumbria County Council has appointed Metcalfes Plant Hire to complete the project, which is being funded by the Infrastructure Recovery Programme.
In order to maintain road stability and pedestrian safety, voids at the bottom of the slope need to be filled, using stone from the shoreline as well as bringing in stone of all sizes, which will slow down deterioration of the slope.
On Monday, there will be two-way traffic signals so that repair material can be delivered and unloaded onto the shoreline.
There is unlikely to be any further need for traffic management until the night of Wednesday July 13, the county council said, when the road will be closed overnight so the contractor can deliver rock armour to protect the repairs.
Metcalfes is expected to stay on site for around two weeks, but the county council said due to the scale of the project, some delays could be possible and teams will make every effort to minimise disruptions. Footpaths will remain open during the work.
Cllr Keith Little, Cumbria County Council’s cabinet member for highways, said: “This essential programme of work will help to improve the slopes on the B5289 near to Ashness Bridge Pier, which have been damaged by winter storms.
“This work will help to stop the deterioration of the slopes and will be coordinated to minimise disruption and delays. I’d like to thank the local communities for their patience and understanding while we make these essential improvements”.
