Members of the west Cumbria branch of the Campaign for Real Ale have voted Keswick Rugby Club the 2023 club of the year on the strength of the fine hand-pulled ale that is sold at its busy club bar.
This is the ultimate ale accolade for a club in the large territory covered by the West Cumbria branch of CAMRA in its annual club of the year competition.
The house beer at Keswick Rugby Club, which is also open to non-members, is Swan Blonde from the Bowness Bay Brewery in Kendal and steward Craig Howitt keeps it in fine fettle.
Local branch member Hugh Price says the beer in the club is consistently good, reasonably priced and there is no better place in Keswick for mingling with locals over a pint.
He commented that the club is to be commended for the huge amount of training it does for youngsters and of course it is the venue for the hugely successful Keswick Beer Festival, now in its 25th year, in conjunction with the Keswick Lions and which has raised many thousands of pounds for local good causes.
The club recently upgraded its outside seating area and Hugh says this has got to be the best mountain vista from any beer garden in the town. It will be presented with a certificate by CAMRA branch chairman Stephen Walker in the near future.
